Firstly, how many cups does it have?   You’ll find anemometers with 2, 3, or 4 cups.  If you read up on Wikipedia (no need, I’ve done it for you), you’ll learn that the 3-cup anemometer was specifically designed for accuracy.  No need to go into the details here, but basically, if you’re looking for something as accurate as possible, go for 3 cups.

Where will you be using it?   Does it need to be portable?  Some anemometers will be handheld & easily portable, while others… might still be portable-ish, but are more intended to be mounted on a pole or a vehicle.

If you’re looking for a handheld mounted anemometer then this is a great option.  It’s great quality and has mutliple functions from wind speed, temperature and wind chill.  BTMETER is reputable brand which builds great weather gadgets.

The BT-100 Handheld Ademometer is nice and light and of course extremely portable (duh, its handheld!).  It also has the ability to be mounted on to a tripod if you do want a fixed position.

Even though this is a small portable machine its wind measuring accuracy is pretty good and it measure a wide range of speeds (0.67~67.1mph).

If you are interested in weather updates & want to know how to measure wind speed then understanding anemometers is valuable. Wind speed determines how soon a storm will arrive and how it affects the creation of high and low-pressure areas.  Measuring wind speed is an important factor when piloting a plane or conducting an outdoor athletic activity.

 

What Measures Wind Speed?

Wind speed is measured by using an instrument called the anemometer. The unit of anemometer is FPM or feet per minute.

An anemometer has has five basic types. These are, Mechanical Anemometer, Pressure Tube Anemometer, Thermal Anemometer, Sound Wave Anemometer and Doppler Laser Light Anemometer.

Each type has its own subcategories along with advantages and disadvantages. These characteristics make each type ideal for measuring wind speed in particular situations.

Types Of Anemometers To Measure Wind Speed:

1. Mechanical Anemometers

These anemometers are among the oldest and most popular, so how do they work? They operate by simply having the wind push on them and then measuring angles or rotations.

Mechanical Anemometers comes in three types.

The oldest form of what measures wind speed. These simple meters were invented by Italian architect Leon Battista Alberti in 1450. They use a plate mounted on a strip of springy metal which is faced into the wind. As wind speed increases, the plate is lifted and bent back. The change in angle of the hanging rod is measured and corresponds to wind velocity.

As you could imagine, this type of anemometer is not very accurate due to many factors. Think low wind speeds and deterioration of the plate and springs over time. A variation of this consists of attaching a ping pong ball to a string and determining wind velocity by the angle of the string as the wind pushes the ball.

 

Cup Anemometers

The classic image of four cups rotating around a vertical pole was made possible by inventor Dr John Thomas Romney Robinson in 1845. Originally, the device would measure wind speed by counting the number of cup rotations over a time interval.

This technique was improved by the use of electronics for measuring purposes. Electrical components can either provide greater accuracy in counting rotations per time unit or act as a small generator that creates higher wattage as wind speed increases.

Propeller / Vane Anemometers

The use of a fan permits wind direction to be simultaneously determined with wind speed. The vane with the turbine has to be facing into the wind else the whole machine will rotate.

Vane anemometers give users choices of units of measurement: m/s, ft/min, km/h, MPH and knots to accommodate different types of applications.

2. Pressure Tube Anemometers

Another very old approach to measure wind speed is through the use of a pressure tube. First developed by James Lind in 1775, the basic idea is to start with a U-shaped tube and bend one end over to create a horizontal section. This piece will face into the wind. Liquid is placed into the tube and wind blowing into the horizontal portion will force the liquid up along the vertical section.

Modern versions have replaced the liquid with a flexible membrane. This moves in response to pressure differences, while a gauge translates this into wind speed. With no mechanical parts, this instrument for measuring wind speed can go for long periods without maintenance.

3. Thermal / Hot Wire Anemometers

These thermal measuring devices are also known as hot wire anemometers. You start with the underlying principle that a flowing wind cools things off.

The device includes a thermostat that keeps a heated wire at a steady temperature. So, as the wind blows across the wire, it’s cooled and more electricity is used to bring it back up to its set temperature. The increased draw of electricity is what measures wind speed.

 4. Sound Wave Anemometers

  • Acoustic Resonance Anemometers

Because sound needs gas molecules to travel through, their speed and direction can affect the speed of the sound waves. Ultrasonic anemometers use this phenomenon to calculate wind speed. They compare the travel time between a sound generator and a receiver to what it should be under no wind.

The big drawback here is that turbulence created by wind flowing around the instrument itself can distort the results. Rainfall can also play havoc with readings.

However, not all of that rain will soak into the soil where the roots of your lawn can use it.  The same thing may occur if you run your sprinklers for too long.  If puddles begin to form in your lawn, you may encounter runoff. 

Sprinkler water running down the street and not soaking into the soil is wasted and costing you money!  It may be more beneficial to turn on the sprinkler for ten or twenty minutes, turn it off for a bit to allow the water to soak into the soil, and then turn on the sprinkler again.

The “screwdriver test” is a good way to judge whether or not you are getting a sufficient soak.  If you can easily push a six-inch screwdriver into the soil, then when you remove it there’s soil coating the screwdriver shaft, your lawn is getting a good soak.  If the screwdriver comes out dry, you need to give your lawn more water.

We recommend that you set your mower to a higher setting.  Mowing to 2 1/2 to 3 inches has several advantages when looking to create the perfect lawn.

If you’re strictly looking for a product that will plug into your smartphone, then this meter from Vaavud could be a good choice for you.

Again I feel it’s worth pointing out that you’ll need a headphone jack for this, and that may be problematic for some phones, e.g. newest iPhones.

With this wind speed meter, you’ll download an app that comes along with the purchase. Plugin the anemometer to your headphone jack and read wind speed within the app.

If I’m being honest, I’d personally go with a handheld one such as the Holdpeak every time. That being said, this option is smaller, and it doesn’t require a battery. Both of those things could be useful so, bear in mind that:

  • It isn’t compatible with some phones
  • The range is weaker (picking up only between 2m/s and 25m/s)

When is it too windy to fly a drone?

Good question! The answer (shockingly) is: it depends. And it mostly depends on the model you’re flying.

There are some really cheap drones out there that will be easily knocked off-course by a slight breeze, or someone coughing nearby. Okay, maybe not that easy. But if you care enough about your drone to be reading this article, then you probably have something halfway decent.

Mario from TipsForDrones.com suggests that a good rule of thumb is to never fly in winds that are more than two-thirds of your drone’s max speed. So if your drone goes up to 18mph, steer clear of winds being 12mph+.

Of course the less wind the better, and you should check your own instruction manual or any other guidance provided by the manufacturer, but this rule of thumb should serve well. More than two-thirds = don’t risk it.

What To Look For In A Wind Meter

These are probably all fairly obvious things to think about, but just in case they’re helpful. When shopping for your wind meter, do consider:

  • Are you looking for something that is handheld/battery-operated, or something that plugs into a smartphone
  • What are the minimum & maximum detectable speeds
  • How long is the battery life
  • Is there a backlight
  • Does it only measure wind speed, or also wind chill & other factors
  • How big & heavy is it
  • Will it mount to a tripod, or attach to a lanyard
